Asia-Pacific Population Journal
Vol 19, No. 1, March 2004

Protective childhood family characteristics such as growing up with two parents, not having frequent quarrels in the family and having close relationships with parents tend to lower the probability of early initiation of substance use and pre mari tal sex.

Despite the success of the family planning programme implemented since 1989 in the Islamic Republic of Iran, the analysis of data from a large nationally representative sample of women showed that a significant proportion of pregnancies were unintended.

The provision of prenatal care and the promotion of institutional child birth have the potential to reduce maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality, both through the identification of problems during pregnancy and by providing women with infor mation about the benefits of delivering in a medical institution.
