As a follow-up to the signing of the Intergovernmental Agreement on the Asian Highway Network, UNESCAP is implementing a project to identify investment requirement and priorities for the development of the Asian Highway network. Under the project a series of subregional expert group meetings are planned. The first subregional Expert Group Meeting on Identifying Investment and Priorities for the Development of the Asian Highway Network and related Intermodal Connections, for the SAARC subregion, was held in Islamabad, Pakistan from 21-23 September 2004, where representatives of member States, subregional organizations and bilateral and multilateral donors participated. The Meeting agreed on a list of priority projects for investment in the SAARC subregion and estimated about US $ 800 million would require to upgrade and improve the Asian Highways in the SAARC subregion.
