In the past three years since the appointment of Mr. Kim Hak-Su as Executive Secretary, ESCAP has undergone a process of re-engineering now regarded by many in the United Nations and in intergovernmental bodies as a successful example of how a United Nations entity can transform itself into a results-driven organization. This report sets out how this was done, the process involved, the content and outcome of the re-engineering and how it has made United Nations ESCAP a more effective organization to meet the challenges towards the year 2020. It then examines the extensive range of programmes ESCAP undertakes to promote regional cooperation and integration and address the pressing need to tackle poverty in all its forms. Finally, it assesses the challenges that ESCAP and the region must prepare to face by the year 2020.
