Since ecotourism has been directly linked to the greater prospects for sound and sustainable tourism development with strong possibilities for appropriate local participation and shared responsibility for preserving the environment, the cultural heritage and people’s way of life, it is important to focus on the specific situation and prospects for ecotourism. The review shows a number of points that deserve special attention such as the definition of ecotourism, the current situation and the roles of various stakeholders, the potential for further expansion of ecotourism in each country and any impediments and how to overcome them in order to sustain the sound development of ecotourism.
