| This paper looks at the current status of the World Trade Organization (WTO) accession process and the experience of ESCAP developing members undergoing WTO accession: Bhutan, Cambodia, the Lao People's Democratic Republic, Nepal, Samoa, Vanuatu, Tonga and Viet Nam. It explores some of the major obstacles to WTO membership, together with lessons learnt and suggests possible improvements in the efficiency of the accession process. The Uruguay Round provisions on special and differential treatment for developing countries are examined and their relevance to accession is assessed. The development of a regional network among acceding countries and the role that ESCAP could play are discussed. |
