The publication, initiated by the Regional Working Group on Meteorological Satellite Applications on Natural Hazards Monitoring, is one of the regional cooperation in space technology applications for sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific under ESCAP's Regional Space Applications Programme. It aims to promote awareness of the potential usefulness of meteorological satellite data in environment and natural hazards monitoring. The Directory describes meteorological satellite systems and their applications in weather analysis and forecasting, agriculture, hazard monitoring, and marine watch, and other fields. It is based on the experiences of countries in the region: Australia, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Pakistan, the Philippines and Sri Lanka.
