The theme of the International Year of Older Person 1999, "Towards a society for all ages", has four dimensions: the situation of older persons, lifelong individual development, multigenerational relationships, and development and the ageing of populations. This manuscript has been issued as a preliminary, unedited, version of a study of the latter dimension: the interaction between population ageing and development. At a later date, the study will be issued as part one of a three-paper publication. Part two of the publication deals with the third dimension: issues relating to multi-generational relationship (see the publication below). The last part presents the report of the Regional Seminar on Promoting a Society for All Ages held in Bangkok from 1 to 4 December 1998. Click to download a copy of the report or read it online.

Both the Regional Seminar and the forthcoming publication form the major components of the project "Regional Support to the International Year of Older Persons", generously funded by the Government of Japan.
