Freight forwarders are recognized as the backbone of multimodal transport in the Greater Mekong sub-region, and key players in the promotion and expansion of foreign trade and intra-regional trade. To enhance the activities of freight forwarders through regional and world markets and to develop sub-regional networks, ESCAP implemented a freight forwarding and multimodal transport development and promotion project in six selected countries: Cambodia, People's Republic of China, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam. This publication reports on the activities and recommendations of the project and includes papers on the six countries. The objectives of ESCAP's project were to review the present situation of freight forwarding and multimodal transport, to identify constraints facing freight forwarders in the six selected countries and determine strategies to overcome these constraints, and to enable national freight forwarders associations to meet their training needs and requirements. The publication contains reports of the Sub-regional Seminar and on the Development of Freight Forwarding and Multimodal Transport held in Bangkok from 14 to 15 October 1999. The reports from Country-level Workshops on Freight Forwarding and Multimodal Transport held in Vientiane from 3 to 4 November 1999, Ho Chi Minh, Viet Nam from 11 to 12 November 1999, Phnom Penh from 15 to 16 November 1999 and Yangon from 18 to 19 November 1999 are also included.
