At the ESCAP’s fifty-third session in 1997, the Commission suggested that a plan of action should provide the framework for effective cooperation and promotion of tourism by member countries and areas. Accordingly, at its fifty-fifth session in April 1999, the Commission adopted the Plan of Action for Sustainable Tourism Development in the Asian and Pacific Region (PASTA). PASTA aims to ensure long-term prosperity in Asia and the Pacific by increasing the contribution of tourism through responsible action by governments and stakeholders at the national level, with supporting action at the regional level in order to bring benefits to wide segments of society. The publication contains a review of progress made and the obstacles or constraints encountered by reporting ESCAP member countries and areas, which have been taking action to implement PASTA since its launching in 1999. Supporting actions taken at regional level are also covered.
