| This study aims to review the national technical standards and to identify highway routes of international importance to connect North-East Asia with Central Asia, the Caucasus and Europe. The development of the Asian Highway and an overview of related international transport development programmes are presented. The efforts of various international organizations towards the improvement of land transport networks are described. Proposed routes are reviewed for inclusion in the Asian Highway network following the agreed criteria. A new route numbering system is recommended for the proposed Asian Highway routes. The coverage of the Asian Highway network has now reached to 29 member countries.
