Silkworm breeding can be defined as the art and science of improving the genetic entity of silkworms in relation to their economic utilization. Silk producing countries in the Asia and Pacific region experience serious problems in the field of silkworm breeding. This publication intends to serve as a guideline to organize or revive a breeding programme, as well as a quick reference to silkworm breeders. It reviews most common fundamental principles directly applicable to silkworm breeding. It also offers a brief background on silkworm breeding, including genetics and statistical methods. It outlines the necessary facilities and tools required for establishing a silkworm breeding programme. It explains different techniques for standard major tests and examinations of various silkworm breeding-related items. It offers a list of the major international silkworm stock centres.
