| Women in Vanuatu: A Country Profile, Statistical Profiles, No.6, 1996, 33 page.
Traditionally, the status of women in Vanuatu society has been subordinate to men. Over the years, however, there have been changes though in many respects, the role of women particularly in the rural areas, remains more or less as it has been. While the Government has attempted to take legal and administrative measures to ensure women's rights, there is a lack of awareness among senior officials and community leaders about issues affecting women. The present profile attempts to pool together available data so as to provide a more clear and detailed insight regarding the situation of women in Vanuatu. |

| One of the sixteen country profiles on the situation of women and men have published by UNESCAP in 1995-1999. The profiles present available statistical data, information and analysis on women in the family, at work and in public life. The profiles are intended to highlight the areas where action is needed and to raise the consciousness of readers about issues concerning women and men. These profiles are a major component of the activities under the project on improving statistics on women in the ESCAP region, which is funded by the Government of the Netherlands. All of the 16 profiles have already been issued; they are for Bangladesh, China, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran (Islamic Republic of), Japan, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, the Republic of Korea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vanuatu. |
