| Women in the Solomon Islands: A Country Profile, Statistical Profiles, No.7, 1996, 48 page.
Despite the existence of matrilineal traditions, there is a strong patriarchal base throughout the Solomon Islands; women in practically all spheres of life play a role that is somewhat inferior or subordinate to that of men. Although the government has recognized the importance of women's contribution to the development of the country and has made a general commitment to meet women's needs and ensure their equal participation in development activities, this commitment has yet to be translated into sectoral policies and programmes. This profile is an attempt to pool together the available data as well as to highlight the data gaps in order to facilitate a systematic appraisal of the issues and problems related to women in the Solomon Islands. |

| One of the sixteen country profiles on the situation of women and men have published by UNESCAP in 1995-1999. The profiles present available statistical data, information and analysis on women in the family, at work and in public life. The profiles are intended to highlight the areas where action is needed and to raise the consciousness of readers about issues concerning women and men. These profiles are a major component of the activities under the project on improving statistics on women in the ESCAP region, which is funded by the Government of the Netherlands. All of the 16 profiles have already been issued; they are for Bangladesh, China, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran (Islamic Republic of), Japan, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, the Republic of Korea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vanuatu. |
