Asia and the Pacific is witnessing the fact that older persons are becoming a larger and more visible part of the economic, social and political landscape. The region is inexorably becoming older, along with the rest of the world. What is popularly known as the “greying” or ageing of the population is a phenomenon that is changing the face of the region. Indeed, it may well be the region’s outstanding characteristic - and most challenging situation - in the twenty-first century.
This publication focuses on the situation of older persons in the region. The publication consists of three parts. Part One provides a regional overview of older persons. Part Two highlights successful practices of community-based services for older persons in Asia and the Pacific. The last part, Part Three, presents the findings of a research on older persons in Cambodia, a war-torn country which is among the young societies in the region, yet is expected to face challenges of population ageing in the future. |
