The search for sustainable solutions to many
economic and social the world's rush for economic growth and prosperity is
straining the resources of governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs),
private enterprise and the public at large. It is generally expected that
the region's already overburdened governments will not be able to deal
successfully with all the issues accompanying the demographic revolution.
Instead, the emerging issues related to the rapid ageing of populations in Asia
and the Pacific must be managed by all concerned through concerted efforts by
governments, NGOs, communities and families. The Regional Seminar on
Government-NGO Cooperation for Older Persons convened by ESCAP in Macao, China,
from 16 to 19 June 1997, adopted a set of recommendations on measures for
enhancing cooperation between governments and other entities on behalf of older
persons. The purpose of this publication is to disseminate those
recommendations as widely as possible to all involved |
