This publication examines factors affecting the promotion of rural-based industries. The overall global and regional development is reviewed with emphasis on the major features of the manufacturing sector. The economic performance, the extent of poverty, and underlying reasons for the persistence of poverty in the rural areas are discussed. The current status of rural industrialization and future prospects are examined. Agro-based industries including food, fruit, vegetable and marine processing industries are analysed in terms of value added, employment, linkages within and outside the economy, poverty alleviation, markets and exports and comparative advantages. The major problems including poor infrastructure facilities, lack of skilled workers, modern technology, and support services are presented. Recommendations for the promotion of agro -based industries are outlined.
