In the Asia-Pacific region, there are 182 World Heritage sites, many of which have become major tourism destinations and potential engines for growth, particularly in rural and underdeveloped areas. In this context, the six countries of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) – namely Cambodia, China (Guangxi and Yunnan), Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam – have recognized the value of their cultural heritage sites and the importance of managing these sites properly in order to improve and develop their tourism sector. The impact of tourism at these sites has been both positive and negative, resulting in increased employment opportunities and revenues for tourism, but also greater pressure on the sites and the surrounding communities. There are also indications that in most of the GMS countries, agencies or institutions responsible for managing these sites suffer from weak human resources and lack of higher standards in the management of cultural tourism sites. It was therefore felt that it would be useful and highly beneficial to develop a standardized training package for trainers in cultural tourism sites management. In response to these concerns about capacity building, Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) has developed a training manual for trainers on cultural tourism sites management in GMS. The manual is divided into eight modules. The first six modules are designed to help develop trainers’ knowledge and understanding of cultural tourism. They include examples of various teaching methods (worksheets, group discussions, etc.) Module 7 and 8 are designed to help develop the teaching capacity of trainers. It provides guidelines on how a trainer can plan and run an effective training programme for cultural tourism sites management and how the trainer can enhance her/his knowledge of the subject through a self-learning programme.
