| Having been hit hard by the contagion effect of the economic and financial crisis, the Asia-Pacific region had started to show signs of recovery by mid-2009. Strong support from expansionary macroeconomic policies, particularly fiscal spending—which reached unprecedented magnitudes in some countries—helped the global financial system ward off a systemic collapse and averted a deepening of the recession into a full-fledged depression. The region is expected to gradually come out of the trough in the second half of 2009. |
