Family structure, functions and values are experiencing unprecedented changes in Asia and the Pacific. However, there is often an absence of a family perspective in social policymaking in general and in social protection policymaking in particular. Against this background, ESCAP launched in 2007 a project entitled “Enhancing policies on social services in support of family well-being in Asia and the Pacific”. It aimed to provide governments and other relevant stakeholders in the region with innovative approaches to strengthen family well-being through enhanced policies for the provision of social protection and the effective delivery of social services. Produced as a bi-product of the project, the publication contains a regional overview of changing features of family and existing social protection schemes and services to strengthening family. The country studies on China, Malaysia and Sri Lanka, examine the situation of the family in the country and analyzed the status of social protection and social services policies from the family perspective. The report also includes the Regional Framework for Strengthening the Family through Enhanced Social Protection and Social Services Policies, drawn from the deliberations of activities under the project.
