| UNESCAP has taken the lead in helping member countries identify and formulate the Asian Highway and the Trans-Asian Railway. UNESCAP has also provided assistance to member countries in providing and enjoying competitive shipping and port services. Meanwhile, as countries pursue trade-dependent economic growth in the globalization process, there is an increasing demand for new trade and transport practices that can promote seamless transport by integrating different transport modes of railways, roads and maritime shipping to facilitate trade flows. As the first step towards transport integration in Asia, UNESCAP undertook the project on “Integrated international transport and logistics system for North-East Asia” to assist the member countries in the subregion in promoting an integrated approach to international transport and logistics planning and policy formulation. Based on major findings of the project, this publication provides an overview of transport and logistics in North-East Asia; formulates an integrated international transport network in North-East Asia; evaluates performance and identifies bottlenecks of selected corridors; discusses international legal framework for transport in North-East Asia; and concludes with proposed strategies and actions for the development of the integrated international transport and logistics system for North-East Asia. |
