Contents: Networks are an integral part of the globalization process whether these networks are of component manufacturers in the global production process, transport and communication networks, networks for financial transactions, or networks that assist in improving the efficiency of delivery of government services. In line with these trends, the enclosed publication advocates policies that themselves are network-based and that take direct account of the interconnections. It defines the scope of the proposed network and lays out a broad vision, it brings together in one document information on the status of Asian transport networks, it outlines potential future developments, and it provides preliminary policy guidance to be considered by governments. In essence, the publication describes the conceptual background against which the member countries supported by the UNESCAP secretariat identify specific corridors, routes and intermodal facilities with the overarching goal of developing an international integrated intermodal transport network.
