Adequate infrastructure in the four key sectors of transport, telecommunications, energy and water considered in this study is a prerequisite for opening up access to global trade and investment flows, increasing the competitiveness of production and services and thus sustaining the region’s economic growth. The study prepared for the sixty-second session of the Commission (Jakarta, 6-12 April 2006), analyses the role of infrastructure and its socio-economic linkages as well as regional initiatives in creating, maintaining and utilizing infrastructure with a focus on financing such investment. It identities a number of specific options for strengthening regional cooperation in these areas.
