The Study was conducted with financial support from NASDA of Japan through RESTEC. It aimed to determine the feasibility of an operational earth space information network in the region that would assist access to, and distribution of, data and information required for planning and implementing sustainable development. The study included identification of data and information requirements; network design concepts, configuration and costs; and issues related to policy and institutional matters. Collected information through technical missions and a survey provided essential information on (1) information needs from the network, (2) current use of remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) technology for resource monitoring, global change studies and natural hazard assessment, (3) current use, availability and future needs of new generation satellite data, (4). current status of in-country electronic networks and digital catalogs, (5) data sets that could, and would, be made available to a regional network, and (6) current status of, and future plans for, connection to the Internet. Based on analysis of the information acquired, a structure of the Earth Space Information Network for Asia and Pacific (ESINAP) is proposed and objectives were stated.

Includes: Introduction Objective of the Study Background Information Earth Space Information Network Performance requirements Objectives of ESINAP Proposed Structure for the Network Network Implementation Strategy Roles and Responsibilities of Network Participants Policy, Institutional Isssues and Budget Conclusions and Recommendations
