With the reform and opening up of the Chinese economy and progress in structural transition of Mongolia and the Russian Federation during the last decade or so, new opportunities for economic cooperation among the North-East Asian countries are expected to increase providing a positive impact on socio-economic development. If these opportunities are to be fully realized, it is essential that an appropriate transport and logistics system including adequate maritime shipping and port services be developed to facilitate the efficient and safe flow of trade within the region as well as to and from overseas market. This study reviews recent development of shipping and ports in North-East Asia and identifies bottlenecks to shipping and port development in the subregion and priority issues that should be addressed to solve the bottlenecks. A range of issues that emerged and raised by national experts during the study are discussed to promote subregional cooperation in the shipping and port area.
