About our region

Asia and the Pacific is a region of diversity and disparity, which presents a mixed picture in terms of progress towards the achievement of the MDGs. Based on overall figures, the regional is the most dynamic and economically vibrant in the world. Trade and investment, which have grown exponentially, have contributed to lifting more than 300 million people out of extreme poverty. Despite such impressive progress, the region still accounts for over 60 per cent of the world's poor (641 million) and almost 70 per cent of the total number of people (over 1.9 billion) without access to basic sanitation.

How do we support MDG Achievement through RPTC?

ESCAP focuses on developing the technical, managerial and organizational capacities of developing member and associate member governments to plan and deliver more effective policies and programmes, particularly in support of the achievement of the MDGs. Particular attention has been given to countries with special needs including least developed countries, landlocked developing countries, and small island developing states, in enhancing their statistical capacity to monitor the MDG progress and develop more effective policies and programme to address the issues that hinder the MDG achievement.
