UNESCAP Technical Cooperation Activities
programme priorities and structure

UNESCAP programme priorities are derived from the United Nations Millennium Declaration, taking into account our region-specific needs. These priorities are aligned with three cross-cutting "thematic areas" of the UNESCAP work programme, which are (1) reducing poverty, (2) managing the impact of globalization and (3) addressing emerging social issues.

The thematic approach in the UNESCAP work programme ensures focus and synergy as well as policy coherence. There are eight interrelated and complementary subprogrammes under each thematic area of the UNESCAP work programme:

THEME
SUBPROGRAMMES
Poverty Reduction
Poverty and Development
Statistics
Development of Pacific Island Countries and Territories
Managing Globalization
  Trade and Investment
    Transport and Tourism
    Environment and Sustainable Development
    Information, Communication, and Space Technology
Emerging Social Issues
  Emerging Social Issues

Each subprogramme contains a set of separate, time-bound expected accomplishments, aligned with the overall objective and priorities of the UNESCAP work programme.

Gender dimensions, along with the specific needs of least developed and landlocked developing countries and countries with economies in transition, are mainstreamed and accorded priority throughout our work programme. Given the special geographic situation and needs of the Pacific island developing countries and territories, our work has also been increasingly focused on integration of these countries.
