Green and Organic Agricultural Produce as a Tool for Rural Poverty
Alleviation
Background
UNESCAP
has completed most activities of the project on “Marketing
green and organic agricultural produce as a tool for rural poverty
alleviation”.
The immediate objectives of the project are: (i) to highlight
the positive link between effective marketing of green and organic
produce and rural poverty alleviation; (ii) to enhance the capacity
of governmental and non-governmental organizations in Asia to
design and build marketing channels for organic and green produce
by disseminating existing successful practices; (iii) to facilitate
structured information flows on marketing of organic and green
produce among organizations involved in organic and green agriculture
in Asia through the OFGF.NET.
In close cooperation with the China Green Food Association, an
Expert Group Meeting on “Marketing green and organic agricultural
produce as a tool for rural poverty alleviation” was held
in Changyuan County, Henan Province, China, from 27 to 31 October
2003. The first objectives of meeting was to improve knowledge
of participating countries and organizations on building and maintaining
effective marketing systems for green and organic agricultural
produce as a tool for rural poverty alleviation. The second to
improve networking capabilities and exchange of information for
effective marketing of green and organic agricultural produce
to maximize the effect on rural poverty alleviation.
Experts from Cambodia, China, Philippines, Pakistan, Sri Lanka
and Thailand participated in the five day meeting. The programme
comprised country presentations, field visits and the adoption
of conclusions and recommendations.
Target groups:
Experts from Governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations
directly involved in marketing of green and organic produce. Ultimate
Beneficiaries: Rural Poor
