How have the world’s poorest fared since the early 1980s?

We draw on 454 surveys covering 97 developing countries representing 93% of the population of the developing world. Taking the most recent survey for each country, about 1.1 million households were interviewed, with an average sample size of about 11,000. The surveys were mostly done by governmental statistics offices as part of their routine operations….
