Implementing the
Istanbul Programme of Action (IPoA)

The United Nations LDC 1V Conference adopted the Istanbul Programme of Action (IPoA) for LDCs for the Decade 2011-2020 in May 2011. The IPoA contains eight priority areas of action, each supported by concrete deliverables and commitments. The overarching goal of the IPoA is to overcome the structural challenges faced by the LDCs in order to eradicate poverty, achieve the internationally agreed development goals and enable graduation from LDC category. The aim of IPoA is to enable half the number of LDCs to meet the criteria for graduation by 2020. Some Asia-Pacific LDCs are amongst those that are most likely to meet the criteria for graduation. LDCs need effective national policies, enhanced global support and appropriate mechanisms at all levels for the achievement of the goals and objectives of IPoA. ESCAP in cooperation with OHRLLS will jointly organize the Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting on the Implementation of the Istanbul Programme of Action, Bangkok, 14-16 December 2011 . The meeting would bring together key stakeholders of the IPoA. The main objective of the Meeting is to prepare a draft forward looking Road Map for Implementing the IPoA for the Asia-Pacific LDCs. The Road Map, containing a set of capacity development activities aimed at delivering knowledge products, dissemination and advocacy, expert services, and reviews, monitoring and evaluation, would be expected to provide a basis for formulating technical assistance programmes and projects at the regional, sub-regional and national levels. It will also identify the key agencies and entities which could be involved in delivering these products and services.
