Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting on the Implementation of the Istanbul Programme of Action

Organized by The United Nations Economic and Social commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) and The Royal Government of Cambodia

17-19 December 2012
Siem Reap, Cambodia

As a follow-up to the LDC IV Conference, which adopted the Istanbul Programme of Action in May 2011, the Regional Road Map for implementing the Istanbul Programme of Action (IPoA) for the Asia-Pacific LDCs, was adopted by the ESCAP/OHRLLS Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting on the Implementation of the Istanbul Programme of Action (IPoA) for the Decade 2011-2020, held from 14 to 16 December 2011 in Bangkok. It contains a set of capacity development activities aimed at delivering knowledge products, dissemination and advocacy, expert services, and reviews, monitoring and evaluation, and provides a basis for formulating technical assistance programmes and projects at regional, sub-regional and national levels. It identifies the key agencies and entities which would be involved in delivering these products and services at national, sub-regional and regional levels.

The meeting would bring together key stakeholders of the IPoA, including one senior official each from the Asia-Pacific LDCs who are directly involved with the implementation of the IPoA. Member governments, experts dealing with LDC issues, the UN system, relevant regional organizations, development partners and a broad spectrum of civil society representatives from Asia and the Pacific will also be invited to attend the meeting.

The main objective of the Regional Meeting is to review the progress made and challenges encountered by Asia-Pacific LDCs in implementing the IPoA since its adoption in May 2011, especially the Asia-Pacific Regional Road Map which was adopted by the Regional Meeting in December 2011.

Expected Outcome and Follow-up

The policy makers from the 13 Asia-Pacific LDCs and relevant stakeholders will exchange views and adopt a draft forward looking Outcome Document on the Implementation of the IPoA during the three-day meeting. The draft Outcome Document will form the basis of a document which will be submitted to the Special Body on LDCs and LLDCs during the 69th annual ESCAP Commission session in April/May 2013 for further discussion by member States.
