Professor Bishwambher Pyakuryal, a Professor of Economics at Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu delivered a presentation on the “Global Financial Crisis and the Nepalese Economy” as part of the Development Seminar Series, organized by the Macroeconomic Policy and Development Division on 30 September 2009.
His presentation highlighted recent estimates on the extent of the current Crisis and the impacts to the Nepalese economy. Professor Pyakuryal also spoke on “Nepal’s Binding Constraints to Growth” as part of the ADB, DFID and ILO supported initiative to diagnose Nepal’s growth constraints.
His presentation stimulated lively discussions on Nepal’s potential in hydroelectricity, political restructuring and the need to divert resources to the social sector. The seminar concluded with Professor Pyakuryal's final remarks, stressing that political factors are one of the largest constraints to Nepal’s growth and that increased intraregional trade should be promoted.
