Asia as the Global Engine of Growth: A Compliment or an Early Warning or Both

Because of Asia’s fast growth over the past few decades, many observers have said the 21st Century is Asia’s Century and that Asia is becoming the global engine of growth.
While this statement can be seen as a compliment for the region’s quantitative achievements in the past, it could also be interpreted as an early warning on the need to pay more attention to the quality dimension of growth and development in the future, where there is still plenty of room for improvement.
Dr. Adrianus Mooy is::
One of the founders of Strategic Asia, a private consulting firm and
Honorable Faculty Member of the Indonesian Banking Development Institute (LPPI).
He is also the Senior Advisor/Mentor at Universitas Pelita Harapan,
Rector at Universitas Pelita Harapan, Surabaya and
Chairman of BANK NATIONALNOBU.
The Deputy-Chairman of the National Development Planning Agency (BAPPENAS) for 15 years,
Member of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) for 10 years,
Governor of Bank Indonesia (1988-1993), and
Later appointed as the Ambassador to the European Union in 1993.
He was also the United Nations Under-Secretary General/ Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP) from 1995-2000.
From 2004-2005 he served as the Senior Advisor to the United Nations Support Facility for Indonesian Recovery (UNSFIR).
He had been teaching at Universitas Indonesia for more than 20 years and got his professorship on economics in 1987.
