    In a watershed moment for Asia and the Pacific last Friday, leading statisticians and senior government officials from 41 countries agreed to ambitious steps to improve environment and social statistics, critical in the context of the post-2015 development agenda, and endorsed a strategy to improve civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems in the region.

    A delegation of Ministers from Myanmar wrapped up a 5-day study visit to Singapore last week. The knowledge-sharing visit, jointly organized by the Singapore Cooperation Programme (SCP) and ESCAP, provided an opportunity for the Myanmar Ministers to gain first-hand experience of Singapore’s industrial development policies and strategies to attract foreign investment, provide decent productive jobs and affordable housing for people, and to do so in an environmentally sustainable way.

    Asia-Pacific countries gathered here today on Human Rights Day to discuss strategies to improve civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) in the region. Senior representatives from 46 member States are attending the 10 to 11 December “High-level Meeting on the Improvement of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics in Asia and the Pacific” convened by ESCAP, co-organized by WHO, in collaboration with 18 additional UN, civil society and government partners.
