Introduction to UNESCAP by Executive
Secretary, Mr Kim Hak-Su
As
the regional arm of the United Nations, the United Nations
Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific –
UNESCAP – provides a unique service as the only pan-regional
intergovernmental forum for Asia and the Pacific.
Under my direction, the work of the UNESCAP secretariat has
a direct impact on nearly two-thirds of the world’s
population.
From a Chinese entrepreneur to a tourism official in Vanuatu,
from a farmer in Bangladesh to a technocrat from India,
UNESCAP’s canvass is as broad as it is wide. And its
work is becoming more relevant to the people of this vast
region each day.
The challenges are many but an array of UNESCAP experts,
drawn from a talented pool, are helping Governments from
62 countries across Asia and the Pacific meet their needs.
From providing statistics to sharing best practices in development
and analyzing social and economic data, my team’s
work is making a big difference to the lives of millions
of people.
