Third Session of the Ministerial Conference on Transport
5-9 December, Moscow, Russian Federation
The Third Session of the Ministerial Conference on Transport is being organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in conjunction with the Ministry of Transportation of the Russian Federation in Moscow from 5-9 December 2016.
Transport drives connectivity and is crucial to economic and social development throughout Asia and the Pacific. However, transport is also a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and contributes to smog in cities. It is critical that the region develop sustainable transport systems in order to meet the objects of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including the Sustainable Development Goals.
Senior transport officials and ministers from ESCAP member States will meet in Moscow to deliberate on a new regional action plan on transport development for 2017-2021. They will also deliberate on a ministerial declaration to incorporate the Sustainable Development Goals into transport policy in order to promote the sustainable development of transport systems in the Asia-Pacific region.
Alongside the Ministerial Conference, representatives from the Russian Federation and representatives from ASEAN countries will meet to celebrate 10 years of transport cooperation. Additionally, two side events will be held on “Transport connectivity and SDGs: Perspectives from East and North-East Asia” and “Connecting Central Asia with South and South West Asia”.
