Sustainable Development Goals, regional cooperation and integration top agenda at annual session of high-level UN Asia-Pacific commission
The 72nd session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) will be held under the theme ‘Science, technology and innovation for sustainable development’ at the UN Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand, from 15 to 19 May 2016.
Comprising two parts, the annual session will include the senior officials segment from 15 May to 17 May 2016, in preparation for the ministerial segment, to be held from the afternoon of 17 May to 19 May 2016.
This is the first Commission session to be held since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by the members of the United Nations last September. It offers a unique opportunity to collectively review key challenges to achieving inclusive and sustainable economic and social development in Asia and the Pacific. The high-level dialogue will also enable countries to share their priorities and visions on the regional economic cooperation and integration agenda necessary for successful implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The scale and depth of the SDGs require innovation, along with significant scientific breakthroughs and technological advancements. A ministerial panel on the session’s theme on 18 May will highlight member States’ policy approaches to science, technology and innovation, as well as the collaborative opportunities they see lying ahead.
