International Women’s Day Commemoration for the Asia-Pacific Region
This year’s Asia-Pacific commemoration of International Women’s Day will be dedicated to the theme: ‘Equality for women is progress for all.’
Asia and the Pacific has seen significant advancements towards gender equality, with positive impacts for women, men, girls and boys. Yet, inequalities that perpetuate discrimination and prejudice remain, to the detriment of all. Whether it is violence, barriers to economic participation or women’s absence from decision-making bodies, addressing the challenges to achieving gender equality requires a transformative approach that is underpinned by human rights, accountability and financing.
A highlight of the commemorative event will be a keynote statement by Dr. Shamshad Akhtar, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and ESCAP Executive Secretary. In addition, the event will feature an interactive dialogue with opinion leaders in the area of international development and gender equality.
The commemoration is being organized by the United Nations Regional Coordination Mechanism Regional Coordination Mechanism Thematic Working Group on Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women, under the leadership of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and UN Women.
