The Expert Group Meeting on WSIS+5 and Emerging Issues in Asia and the Pacific was held from 18 to 19 November 2008 at the United Nations Conference Center (UNCC in Bangkok, Thailand. The meeting was organized as a pre-session activity of the First Committee Session on ICT by the Information and Communications Technology and Disaster Risk Reduction Division (IDD) of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).

The main objective of this Expert Group Meeting (EGM) was to exchange knowledge and experiences among the participating experts at technical, institutional and policy levels.

The EGM was organized under the overall theme of WSIS+5 regional review and key and emerging trends in Asia and the Pacific. It highlighted key issues related to ICT development in the region in general and progress made on the implementation of the WSIS Plan of Action in particular. The EGM focused on the following areas:

      1) WSIS+5 regional review
      2) ICT capacity building
      3) ICT and disaster risk reduction and
      4) Emerging ICT issues, including food security and ICT access
