Expert Group Meeting on Regional Cooperation towards Building an Information Society in Asia and the Pacific

Information and Communications Technology and Disaster Risk Reduction Division (IDD) organized the Expert Group Meeting on Regional Cooperation towards Building an Information Society in Asia and the Pacific from 20 to 22 July 2009 at the United Nations Conference Centre (UNCC), Bangkok. The meeting was organized as a follow up to the First Session of the Committee on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) held in Bangkok in November 2008, and the sixty-fifth Commission Session held in Bangkok in April 2009 .

The Expert Group Meeting reviewed the progress in the implementation of the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) including WSIS goals and targets as contained in section B of the Plan of Action of WSIS in Geneva and discussed the necessity of streamlining the implementation of the Regional Action Plan towards the Information Society in Asia and the Pacific. Experts prepared recommendations for actions towards attaining the goals and targets of the WSIS by 2015 in Asia and the Pacific.

The three day meeting was attended by experts from several Asia-Pacific countries including Bangladesh, China , India , Indonesia , Malaysia , Nepal , Pakistan, Sri Lanka , Thailand , and three sub-regional organizations including ASEAN, PIFS, SAARC as well as international/regional organizations such as APT, ITU, UNESCO.
