Space-enhanced Information and Communication Technologies

Space-enhanced ICT brings benefits to the people. Examples:

  • bring medical expertise from urban centres to rural patients through tele-medicine
  • bring education from best experts to students throughout a country via distance learning
  • deliver tools to help farmers and craftsmen directly market their products and services

Satellite based earth observation and communications has now been used for over three decades to bring television and radio broadcast signals, telephone and now Internet connectivity to remote areas such as small islands and landlocked communities. Such services exist in parts of Asia and the Pacific, but more areas could benefit from them.

Besides raw connectivity through satellite communications, space technology has become a vital provider of information content for national decision-makers and the general public. Below are good examples of activities enhanced through space-based imagery and other data.

# weather forcasts
# National development plans
# topographic mapping and infrastructure design,
# preparatory work to reduce disaster risk,
# creating information supporting disaster early warnings,
# monitoring drought and crop development,
# planning irrigation water deployment,
# even planning one’s next vacation

Such capabilities are further described in materials linked to below:

• Towards regional cooperative mechanisms for managing floods and drought in Asia and the Pacific using space technology (http://www.unescap.org/icstd/SPACE/documents/DISASTER/Study_Report/content.asp)
