About the Research Group
The Information, Communication and Space Technology Division (ICSTD) established the Research Group in December 2006, in response to the new orientation of ESCAP to be an organization that can undertake cutting-edge research and policy analysis, and promote creative solutions to address the changing development needs of its member States.
Some of our member States have been leading the global ICT revolution, while the others have been playing a marginal role. However, almost all the member States have been facing daunting challenges of bridging digital divides - be it rural-urban, gender or generation - in this fast changing environment. UN ESCAP through ICSTD, will be recognized as a vital participant in Asian-Pacific ICST development and a key player offering solutions to these challenges.
Together with its ability to fill gaps, its leveraging of limited personnel resources by partnerships, and its convening power, ICSTD will make significant contributions to the development of an equitable and inclusive information society, achievement of MDGs and advancement of socio-economic development among ESCAP’s members and associate members.
The Research Group Mission
The Research Group (RG) undertakes analytical work with a view to advancing the agenda of the information society and strengthening the strategic position of UNESCAP through ICSTD. The Research Group will focus on assessing situations, analysing patterns, developing policy tools and advocating for strategic issues.
Our goals
The RG aims to enhance collaboration and create synergies among Sections as well as with other Divisions. The goal is to benefit all ESCAP Members and Associate Members, appropriately according to their situation – while placing emphasis to help countries that are not yet on a self-sustaining growth path benefiting from ICST.
The RG focuses on research that deepens understanding on targeted topics, of promise to benefit Asia and/or the Pacific. It harmonizes on work to be done. Some projects may be appropriate for the entire RG’s attention; others may be more appropriate for a subset of the RG to work on.
Qualifying topics will support achieving the Millennium Development Goals, goals of the WSIS Plan of Action, and/or other internationally agreed development goals.
