Inter-agency coordination
The Regional Inter-agency Working
Group on ICT was established by ESCAP and its partners
in August 2001, with a view to strengthening cooperation
and coordination at the regional level and promoting
mutually complementary and coherent strategies and
programmes which would ensure synergy of efforts in
achieving the Millennium Development Goals. It was
also aimed at facilitating the regional preparations
for and follow-up to the World Summit on the Information
Society. It consists of international, regional and
sub-regional intergovernmental organizations dealing
with information, communication and space technology
(ICST) in Asia and the Pacific.
The Working Group has played an instrumental role
in developing a regional consensus in the preparations
for the Geneva phase, as well as, Tunis phase of the
World Summit. Its members made substantial contributions
to the organization of the Regional Conferences and
other regional/sub-regional events. They also participated
in the formulation of the regional road map and regional
action plan towards the information society.
