Promotion of Distance Learning and Service Networks for Development in China and other Countries

The Project

Access to knowledge is central to development in general, and that insufficient access to knowledge is a major cause of prevalence of socio-economic differences and poverty in many countries in particular.

The project goal is to improve sharing of knowledge between developed and less-developed areas in China and similarly in the other target countries through distance learning and services networks. In particular, the objective is to share the experiences of the Tsinghua University’s “Education Aiding the Poor (EAP)” project, as well as those of similar networks in other countries.

The EAP network was set-up three years ago by the School of Continuing Education at Tsinghua University, connecting the modern teaching centres. The Tsinghua University was the earliest to open a modern distance learning academy in China. The distance learning initiative was received well and brought attention and support from international community and is considered to be one of “good practices.”

The Conference - Beijing, 26-28 June 2005
This conference focused on spreading knowledge in poverty-stricken rural areas through modern information and communications technology (ICT), and its applications, particularly e-learning.

The Content of Conference
Reports was prepared on the case-studies <Tsinghua University Education Aiding the Poor Project through E-learning> and <The Network Spread of Information and Knowledge: developed areas aiding under-developed areas to achieve overall economic and social development >, and a paper on distance learning for poverty reduction in regional perspective.
