| ESCAP has long recognized the importance of space technology
applications for providing the essential information for
natural resources accounting, environmental management,
disaster monitoring and prevention, land use mapping and
sustainable development planning. The Space Technology Applications
Section was established following the first Ministerial
Conference on Space Applications for Development in Asia
and the Pacific, held in Beijing in 1994. The Section's
main objective is to support the implementation of the Regional
Space Applications Programme for Sustainable Development
(RESAP), which consists of the three-tiered network.
