SRI LANKA

Sri Lanka focuses on remote sensing and GIS, satellite meteorology and satellite communications. The Arthur C. Clarke Centre for Modern Technologies, established in 1984 to accelerate the promotion, assimilation and development of modern technologies in Sri Lanka, has been designated as the national coordinating agency for space applications in the country, where a space applications centre was established. The National Committee for Space Technology Applications is chaired by the Minister of Science, Technology and Human Resource Development.

The Survey Department is the principal agency in Sri Lanka involved in the application of satellite remote sensing data. The Department of Meteorology has been using satellite data for weather forecasting since about 1972. Sri Lanka Telecom is the national organization responsible for satellite communications, operating three satellite Earth stations.
