SRI LANKA
Sri Lanka focuses on remote sensing and GIS, satellite
meteorology and satellite communications. The Arthur C.
Clarke Centre for Modern Technologies, established in 1984
to accelerate the promotion, assimilation and development
of modern technologies in Sri Lanka, has been designated
as the national coordinating agency for space applications
in the country, where a space applications centre was established.
The National Committee for Space Technology Applications
is chaired by the Minister of Science, Technology and Human
Resource Development.
The Survey Department is the principal agency in Sri Lanka
involved in the application of satellite remote sensing
data. The Department of Meteorology has been using satellite
data for weather forecasting since about 1972. Sri Lanka
Telecom is the national organization responsible for satellite
communications, operating three satellite Earth stations.
