SINGAPORE
Space technology applications in Singapore are focused
on satellite communications, satellite meteorology and remote
sensing. The National Science and Technology Board is the
main funding body for research projects in space technology,
including LEO satellite development at the Nanyang Technological
University, remote sensing research at the Centre for Remote
Imaging, Sensing and Processing (CRISP) of the National
University of Singapore, and the Asian Internet Interconnection
Initiative using VSATs at Temasek Polytechnic.
CRISP set up a ground receiving station for satellite remote
sensing data while the Meteorological Service of Singapore
was operating a NOAA and GMS reception and processing facility.
The country was also providing host facilities to the ASEAN
Specialized Meteorological Centre, which carried out research
studies relating to meteorology. GIS is used in a large
number of public and private sector organizations in Singapore.
The Singapore Land Data Hub plays the role of a central
repository of geographic information, with over 30 agencies
contributing to it. Singapore launched its first satellite,
ST-1, in 1998. |
