The National Coordinating Committee for Remote Sensing
was converted into the Science and Technology Coordinating
Council- Committee on Space Technology Applications. Besides
the National Mapping and Resource Information Authority
(NAMRIA), about 20 other government and private institutions
are involved in the application of remote sensing to a wide
variety of resource and environmental activities. Data from
NOAA and GMS meteorological satellites are used by the national
weather bureau for weather analysis and forecasting, flood
forecasting, monitoring of vegetation index and sea surface
temperatures.
Two communications satellite, Mabuhay and Agila, were launched
in 1997. The Department of Transportation and Communication
prepared a transponder utilization plan in 1998 to govern
the use of free transponder space in these satellites for
such purposes as distance learning and disaster warning.
The University of the Philippines Open University prepared
for the greater use of advanced communication technologies
for distance education. The Philippine Information Infrastructure
Policy project, which aims to encourage the government,
the general public and the private sector to develop and
manage the Philippine Information Infrastructure, is ongoing. |
