NEPAL

Nepal focuses on the use of remote sensing and GIS for resource and environmental surveying and management and disaster monitoring. The former National Remote Sensing Centre was merged in 1989 with the Forest Survey and Statistics Division of the Forest Research and Survey Centre and renamed the Remote Sensing Section, which focuses its work on forest resource inventory and monitoring land-use changes. Agencies and universities are applying remote sensing and GIS for various projects relating to forest mapping, geological mapping, mining, agriculture, land-cover and land-use classification, land resource assessment and planning, water resource assessment and watershed management. An APT receiving station for meteorological satellites at the Tribhuvan International Airport receives visible and infra-red images from NOAA satellites daily and from Meteor satellites occasionally, and hourly images from Japan's GMS satellites. The Nepal Telecommunication Corporation acts as the operating agency for the Intelsat satellite communication system.
