MONGOLIA
Remote sensing and GIS activities in Mongolia are coordinated
by the National Remote Sensing Centre, created in 1987 under
the Ministry for Nature and the Environment. Application
projects on remote sensing and GIS that the Centre has undertaken
include thematic mapping, natural resource inventory and
monitoring, natural hazard assessment and climate change.
Remote sensing and GIS technologies have a wide user base.
The Hydrometeorological Department of Mongolia, involved
in satellite meteorology, maintains a network of weather
forecasting bureaus in the countryside and provides them
with cloud, snow cover, vegetation and soil moisture maps
on a regular basis. It also maintains a meteorological satellite
data reception facility which is capable of receiving and
processing data from the NOAA, Meteor and GMS satellites.
Space activities relating to satellite communications,
which include television broadcasting, voice telephony and
non-voice services, are coordinated by the Ministry of Infrastructure
and carried out by the International Telecommunications
and cooperation Department of the Mongolian Telecommunications
Company. Mongolia has recently implemented VSAT and Internet
projects. |
