REPUBLIC OF KOREA
In the Republic of Korea, three ministries are concerned
with space applications, namely the Ministries of Science
and Technology, Information and Communication, and Industry.
A Steering Committee of Science and Technology coordinates
space activities in the country. A national space policy
has been formulated and calls for the design, development
and launch of 19 satellites until 2015.
The KITSAT programme of the Satellite Technology Research
Centre (SaTReC) of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science
and Technology, the KOMPSAT programme of the Korea Aerospace
Research Institute (KARI) and the Koreasat programme of
Korea Telecom are progressing well. A ground receiving station
with a 13-metre antenna has recently been established at
SaTReC. It receives SPOT and JERS data and has the capability
to acquire ERS and Radarsat data. KARI is building a satellite
remote sensing ground receiving station. In addition, there
are several agencies that are receiving data from NOAA and
GMS for weather forecasting, disaster monitoring and other
environmental applications. |
